Accepted Ad Serving Technology

SourceForge accepts most popular rich media ad formats. SourceForge's tech-savvy audience consists of leading-edge early adopters of technology products and services, with discerning tastes and opinions. As such, rich media formats for this audience must be user-initiated if the creative is running outside of the standard ad unit, or includes sound with any video offering.

Rich media vendors accepted on most SourceForge sites include the following:
  • PointRoll FatBoy and TomBoy formats only. BadBoy and TowelBoy are not accepted due to lack of user-initiation options.
  • KlipMart Video may be host or user-initiated, but audio must be user-initiated. The ad must have clearly visible "play", "mute" and "stop" controls.
  • Atlas/Ad4Ever Floating ads are accepted within the standard ad unit if they are user-initiated.
  • EyeBlaster Pending site approval and taken on a site-by-site and case-by-case basis.
  • Unicast/Enliven In-page and In-page Expandable formats are accepted if they are user-initiated.
  • EyeWonder Video may be host or user-initiated, but audio must be user-initiated. The ad must have clearly visible "play", "mute" and "stop" controls.
  • Avivocom LiveBanner ads are accepted, but may require site approval. 5 business days required for testing.
Video and Audio
Video and audio components are fully supported by SourceForge. However, as much of the audience uses the network as a part of their work, audio must be user initiated with a click. Mouse-over initiated audio is not acceptable. There should be clearly visible "play", "mute" and "stop" controls where appropriate.

Expandables
Expandables are supported, although they must be fully and obviously user initiated. Mouse-over can indicate user initiation, however SourceForge requires that only a portion of the creative be the initiator and that it uses a mouse-over color change or something similar to indicate that expansion will occur. The ad must also either contain a "click to close" button or collapse when the cursor leaves the ad.

Peel Backs
The initial teaser ad should be 125px wide and 125px tall. The transition into the expanded 700x700px ad must be user initiated with a click. The 700x700 ad must include a "click to close" button, and if it includes video or audio, should have clearly visible controls. This ad is not accepted on all of our sites, and will require additional time for set-up and testing. Please note that half of the content area of the teaser and the expanded ads are taken up by the page-peel effect on a 45 degree angle.

RSS
Real Simple Syndication (RSS) is an exciting alternative to traditional web advertising. However, it presents certain unique challenges. As a result, SourceForge can only accept static images no larger than 468px wide and 120px tall. The conventional and preferred size is 468x60.

Overall Guidelines
  • Please submit the creative five business days prior to the campaign start date to allow for adequate testing. Any ads submitted within this five day window may result in delayed start dates. Ads not meeting SourceForge's specifications may also result in delayed start dates.
  • A sniffer should be used to check for browser support and a default GIF/JPG/PNG banner supplied for non-supported browsers.
  • SourceForge prohibits creative substitution or modification of any third-party served ads without prior approval. Ads altered without prior approval will be pulled from rotation until they comply with SourceForge's specifications.
  • We will notify advertisers of any ads that either fail to appear or seriously delay page load times. If the problem can not be resolved with-in 24 hours, the ad will be pulled from rotation until it can be fixed.
  • For third-party served ads, SourceForge will accept up to a 5% discrepancy in the delivery numbers between our systems and the third-party vendor's only if the third party-vendor has provided us with their daily delivery report.
